Animal Abuse/Neglect
Animal abuse and neglect are ongoing issues in the world today and are topics that I am thoroughly interested in learning more about. According to The Humane Society of the United States, some extreme measures that are commonly taken by animal abusers are stabbing, beating, shooting, and even setting animals on fire, which can be defined as active cruelty. Neglecters tend to completely do without caring properly for the animal, this is known as passive cruelty. The people who treat animals this way are usually mentally ill and not only do they mistreat the animals, but are likely to harm other people as well. Pets are often used as forms of comfort to humans, in fact, 98% of Americans consider their pets to be companions to their family, according to the American Humane Association. This is an issue I believe to be incredibly important and am anxious to begin researching further.

I think that animal cruelty should be looked at more closely in our society. People tend to over look how animals are being treated because we are too caught up in our own daily lives to notice. Its hard to think about how close I am to my pet and what she could be going through if caught in the hands of an animal cruelty offender. I want to work for the MSPCA in the future which is why i am a criminology major to help neglected animals in need and arrest their offenders.
ReplyDeleteI agree, most people consider their animals part of the family. Its not fair to the animal to hurt them, they show us love and affection, there is no need to take our anger on an animal. We've seen Michael Vick get arrested for having dogs fight each other and hopefully people will see his punishment and try to stop animal cruelty from happening.
