Youth Violence
I am thinking of pursuing the social issue of youth violence. Youth violence involves youths and criminal acts. In the recent years there has been a sharp increase in youth violence that leads to criminal acts in urban areas. Between 1985-1992 the juvenile homicide arrest rate, the juvenile homicide victimization rate, the number of juvenile homicides involving guns, and the rates of murder committed by 15- and 16-year olds increased by more than 100 percent. Also the rate for all the arrests for nonwhite youths for drugs has doubled in the past 10 years. The more youths carrying weapons, makes other adolescents think that it is OK to carry weapons for their safety. There has to be a different way to make youths feel safe in the cities without the use of weapons.

This would be a good social issue to explore. Youths may commit violence for protection, but how they are raised is another factor to consider. If a child is being miss treated within the family they may use violence as an outlet. Also the media could play a role. Movies, TV shows, music or even video games that exhibit violence may give todays youth the wrong message. These could be other possibilities to consider when looking at youth violence in todays society.
ReplyDeleteI agree media does play a huge role in this issue. Many kids feel influenced when watching or being exposed to it. It also can start at a young age with backyard games while playing tag or reenacting a scenario from a television show as well.Great topic!
