One topic I think is really crucial to discuss is social stereotyping. We can see many examples of stereotyping in today's media, such as television shows, movies, and magazines. Does media encourages us to think of these stereotypes? I think a good way to discuss this topic is become aware of the many stereotypes we are exposed to through the media. You'd be surprised how many stereotypes you have heard
I agree that social stereotyping is a big issue that is not widely addressed. I feel that the media plays a huge role on how social stereotyping occurs. People are exposed to media every single day so even if people are unaware of it I think that the media affects how people sterotype.
ReplyDeleteI also agree. Some shows that we watch on TV contain a lot of social stereotyping, such as comedy shows like The Office. We may think it is funny, but some people may take it offensive. Another thing to consider is what type of age groups would be greatly affected by this. For an example, todays youth has a greater chance to be influenced by social stereotyping because they don't fully understand the difference between right and wrong.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that social stereotyping is an enormous issue in the world today. The media plays a large role in the way individuals believe how they should look. For example, models posing for clothing companies are extremely thin, sending the wrong message to a majority of teens across the world. Believing that in order to fit into society they need to resemble the bodies portrayed by the models. Other stereotype issues include race, gender, religion, etc. Popular shows on television today can sometimes subconsciously influence our beliefs and actions, such as The Jersey Shore. The cast of the show often refer to their Italian background, using the term "guido" in reference to themselves and other Italians. However, in no way does "guido," tanning, blowouts, and excessive weight lifting define Italians as a whole.
